The Sensational Work And Generosity Of Christopher Whight MD Earns Him Membership In The Prestigious Ranks Of Stanford Who's Who

Stanford Who's Who welcomes Christopher Whight MD to the ranks of premier professionals as a result of his extraordinary effort in the Healthcare Industry.

CHERMSIDE, QLD, AUSTRALIA, April 17, 2010 /Stanford Who's Who/ -- Stanford Who's Who welcomes Christopher Whight MD to the ranks of premier professionals as a result of his extraordinary effort in the Healthcare Industry. As a Pediatric Cardiologist for the Prince Charles Hospital and especially through his selfless participation in the Operation Open Heart Myanmar program, Dr. Whight has consistently displayed his supreme passion, vision and dedication to the well-being of those in desperate need of medical assistance.

Operation Open Heart Myanmar is a part of the Sydney Adventist Hospital's Health Care Outreach Program. This spectacular program established its roots in the mid 1980's when a group of dedicated healthcare professionals set out to provide assistance to people who were dying of rheumatic heart disease in Tonga. Since that time the outreach has expanded to encompass numerous other countries as well. Approximately 1500 volunteers have donated their time and effort to over 90 programs, allowing for more than 2600 patients to receive essential surgeries.

Operation Open Heart Myanmar started in 2003. Since then, dedicated professionals from across Australia have come together to give their time and money to develop the process of skills transfer, focusing on developing the capacity of their Burmese colleagues to build sustainable cardiologic programs in order to treat and cure their patients themselves, rather than relying on outside teams to service their patients on a "fly in, fly out" basis.

Members of the Queensland team, of which Dr. Whight is an integral part, have visited Myanmar approximately 9 times in the past 6 years, and have recently been nominated for a Pride of Australia award. The overall donation of time, services and materials of the Queensland team along with their colleagues from other states, has been estimated to have reached a value of at least $1.5 million. More importantly, is that the dedication and commitment both of the Open Heart teams and of their Burmese colleagues, is showing results with clear progress in management of patients with all forms of heart disease, particularly the area of congenital heart disease in children and infants.

A major limitation to growth of clinical expertise in programs such as in Myanmar is often the lack of ability to exchange clinical material appropriate for meaningful dialogue, especially quality echocardiographic data in digital form.

With this background, the program is set for even greater growth, due to the offer of robust portable cardiac ultrasound equipment. This equipment produces high quality diagnostic information at a standard equal to that of Australia's healthcare system.

This will allow the capacity for ongoing teaching and sharing of clinical experience during the time when the team is not physically in Myanmar, and streamlines the clinical focus of local needs upon their return to Myanmar. The team believes that using these techniques, the next 2-5 years will see establishment of local facilities for treatment of congenital heart disease in infants, children and older patients not previously possible.

After discussions with the American company Sonosite, they have agreed to provide two echo machines for the program, for use at Yangon Children's and General Hospitals, and the Defense Services General Hospital. The Sonosite company produces a high quality robust portable cardiac ultrasound machine which is widely in use in Australia and around the world, and which the program has used in Cambodia and Myanmar. It is ideal for the requirements in developing countries. This required, and received approval from the US government, despite the embargo of trade with Myanmar, because of the humanitarian nature of Operation Open Heart, and their track record of work in and commitment to developing services in Myanmar.

As a program of this global magnitude requires a steady stream of money in addition to the time and effort of volunteers, donations can be made to the Sydney Adventist Hospital Foundation by clicking here or to the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation which can be found by clicking here

Dr. Whight attained numerous degrees during his educational career at the University of Queensland. In 1968, Christopher earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degrees. He went on to receive his M.R.A.C.P. in 1973, his F.R.A.C.P. in 1978 and DDU in 1979. He has spent the past 30 years working diligently as a professional in the industry. Dr. Whight specializes in Congenital Heart Disease and Diagnosis which is extremely beneficial to the Open Heart Myanmar program.
