Gustave J. Pogo, MD, Honored for Accomplishments in Cardiac Surgery
Dr. Gustave J. Pogo recognized by Cambridge Who's Who
MANHASSET, NY, June 29, 2010 /Surgery PR News/ -- Gustave J. Pogo, MD, North Shore University Hospital Cardiac Surgeon, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of cardiac surgery.
For two decades, Gustave J. Pogo has been making hearts healthier one beat at a time. The cardiac surgeon, who has been stationed at North Shore University Hospital since 1991, specializes in adult cardiac surgery, aortic surgery (ascending, arch and descending aortic aneurysms), mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass, off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery, the surgical repair of IHSS, electrophysiology surgery and congenital adult heart surgery. He has spent countless hours in the operating room performing life-saving procedures that require a critical hand and concise attention to detail.
A fascination with the functioning of the human heart prompted Dr. Pogo to pursue a career as a cardiac surgeon. He quickly learned that improving his patients' lives was the most rewarding aspect of his career. To that end, he would undergo rigorous procedures in an effort to provide individuals with the invaluable gift of life. In a recent rigorous, five-hour procedure, Dr. Pogo performed a mitral valve repair and a two-vessel coronary artery bypass operation. Following a week of recovery in the hospital, with her loving daughters by her side, the patient was discharged and returned home just days later. To Mrs. Nixon and her three daughters, her recovery from heart bypass surgery has been nothing short of a miracle.
At a news conference that took place at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Mrs. Nixon told hospital staff and reporters how she instructed Dr. Pogo to do everything in his power to save her. "I told my doctor I want to live," she said emphatically. "I told him to do whatever he needed to do." Dr. Pogo explained the complexities involved in repairing both the mitral valve and the blocked arteries - one procedure immediately following the other. It was important, he said, to view Mrs. Nixon as a whole person - as a vibrant woman and loving mother - and not merely a 99-year-old statistic. This, he believed, was the true measure of practicing medicine.
Dr. Pogo received his MD in 1983 from New York University. He fulfilled his fellowship from 1988 to 1991 at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He belongs to multiple cardiac and thoracic medical societies. In addition to his role at NSUH, Dr. Pogo is a senior attending surgeon and adjunct associate professor of surgery at New York University School of Medicine.
