Avoiding Medical Malpractice in Cosmetic Surgery
Because of the amount of medical malpractice in the field, cosmetic surgery patients need to be especially vigilant when selecting a physician.
November 12, 2011 /Surgery PR News/ -- Many Americans are enticed by the potential benefits of plastic surgery. Why wouldn't they be? After all, people are inundated with images of celebrities maintaining good looks and taut bodies by having procedures that seem simple enough.
With more people seeking cosmetic procedures, more untrained physicians are entering the market, often with disastrous results. A USA Today report indicates that more doctors trained in other specialties, such as vision, podiatry or obstetrics, are turning to cosmetic surgery to take advantage of lucrative opportunities. However, many have little training in plastic surgery, with some operating on patients only after one weekend shadowing other doctors. As such, stories abound involving doctors with little training committing surgical errors, botching procedures, and sometimes killing patients.
With more cosmetic surgery centers appearing in strip malls and offering low prices, it is important for consumers to be educated about the physicians who will treat them, as well as the risks involved in their procedure.
Important Questions to Ask:
Is the physician board certified? - The doctor you choose should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic or Reconstructive Surgery. Both organizations are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
How often has the physician completed the procedure? - Being board certified is a good sign, but you might not want to see a doctor who primarily does breast lifts for your nose job.
Will the procedure be performed in the hospital? - It is also important to know if your doctor has privileges to perform the surgery at a hospital, so that he or she may treat you if complications arise. Even if the procedure is performed at the doctor's office, it is helpful to know that the same person has hospital privileges.
The recovery time and invasiveness of the surgery are also important considerations. You may need weeks of recovery time, and you should be wary of the physical effects that may be part of the healing process.
If you have been the victim of a botched plastic surgery procedure contact an experienced medical malpractice attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer can advise you of your rights and help you obtain compensation for your suffering.
