CHICAGO, IL, December 29, 2011 /Surgery PR News/ -- Marco G. Patti, Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Gastroenterology. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.
Dr. Patti, a surgeon, teacher and author, has dedicated 18 years to the field of gastrointestinal surgery. He has shared his international experience in gastroenterology as a Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago for the past four years. Currently, he is the Director of the Center for Esophageal Disease, a Center that provides a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of these problems. He specializes in the surgical treatment of esophageal disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernia, Barrett's esophagus, achalasia and esophageal cancer. In addition, he oversees clinics and mentors medical residents and students.
Dr. Patti pursued an MD at the University of Catania in Italy. He then moved to San Francisco in California, where he spent 3 years studying gastrointestinal physiology. Subsequently he completed a residency in general surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and a fellowship in esophageal surgery at the Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. After completion of his fellowship, he started his academic career at the University of California San Francisco where he became Professor of Surgery and Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Motility and Secretions. During his tenure he developed a special interest in minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of esophageal conditions. Throughout his career, he has published more than 170 journal articles and book chapters on esophageal surgery and minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, and has given more than 150 presentations at scientific meetings throughout the world. Moreover, he has had the opportunity to serve as a visiting professor at prominent universities in Italy, Canada, China and the United States.
He has received acclaim from his peers for his outstanding contributions to medicine, and has been honored as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He continues to contribute to his field as a member of the editorial boards of several prestigious professional journals, including Disease of the Esophagus, the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Annals of Surgery and the World Journal of Surgery. Additionally, he serves as the president of the International Society for Digestive Surgery. Dr. Patti is also a member of the American Surgical Association, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Esophageal Club, International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, and many other professional groups. In the last few years he has been regularly recognized among the Best Doctors in America and the Top Surgeons in America. In Italy, his achievements have been honored with the Carlo Urbani Award "Medici d 'Italia" (Doctors of Italy).
